Godzilla Is Getting Its Own Tabletop RPG, Coming To Kickstarter Next Year

Godzilla has enjoyed a successful revival in the past few years. Titles like Godzilla vs Kong and Kong: Skull Island, part of the so-called Monsterverse, have been well received by critics and viewers alike.

There have even been a few decent, if mostly forgettable, video games – Godzilla: Unleashed and Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee are worth playing. And now, as announced exclusively on Gamesradar, we look set to get a potentially excellent TableTop RolePlaying Game.

Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game

Jervis Johnson, Gav Thorpe, and Mark A. Latham, all former Warhammer designers, are signed on to create Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game. The title is set to launch on Kickstarter in March 2026. It will use a standard 52-card deck, rather than dice, and it’s easy to imagine some kaiju-themed cards as stretch goals.

The project is being headed by IDW Games, which is the game division of IDW, a US-based comic publisher with the rights to Godzilla as well as a host of other franchises, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Star Trek.

The game will be based on the G-Force story arc, which first featured in 1993’s Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II movie. G-Force is a military organization that battles Godzilla and other titans. Its use in the game suggests that there will be more layers to the gameplay than just going from one Titan battle to the next, although we should probably still expect to take on the likes of Mothra, Rodan, and King Kong along the way.

A Card-Based TTRPG

Rolling dice is one of the aspects of TTRPGs I love the most, as I’m sure is true of a lot of players. But I’m still intrigued by the concept of using a standard deck of cards in place of D20s, D6s, and, in the case of Dungeon Crawl Classics, D7s.

I know it’s been done before, in games like Castle Falkenstein and Unbound. And other games have used their own tarot-style decks. But I’m slightly ashamed to say I’ve never tried them.

The intriguing mechanic, coupled with a geeky love of Godzilla, has me pretty amped up for the Kickstarter campaign.

We do have a bit of a wait, unfortunately, with the campaign only set for launch in March next year, but fulfilment is expected by the end of 2026, which is a respectable lead time for crowdfunding campaigns, and it gives me time to experiment with card-based TTRPGs before then.

IDW Games will be at PAX Unplugged, which runs from 21-23 November, with visitors invited to partake in play testing. Participants will get exclusive merch, while other visitors will be able to get their hands on other Godzilla RPG goodies.
