Roguelike deck builder, Slay the Spire, was a surprise indie hit when it launched in 2019. And on the back of that success, developers Mega Crit announced during a 2024 Triple-I Initiative stream that they were working on a sequel. Exact details are a little scant, but we do have a general release window, as well as some other information.

A lot of the details we have come from the reveal, a gameplay trailer, and comments made by the developers, with a healthy dash of speculation thrown in.

Release Date And Details

The game was given a release window of 2025. And, according to the game’s Steam page, that window still holds, although there aren’t too many months left.

So far, the developers have only really confirmed it will be available in Early Access on PC, macOS, and Steam Deck. There’s no word of a console release yet. The original game first launched on Windows, Mac, and Linux before it then hit PS4, Switch, and, finally, Xbox One. We may experience a similar staggered release with the sequel.

We also know that while the original was created on Unity, the developers took umbrage with Unity’s 2023 fee policy changes, and the new title is being developed on Godot, an open-source development platform that has been used by many an indie developer across multiple platforms.

As yet, no price has been mentioned, but developers have stated there will be no microtransactions.

From the gameplay trailer, we can see visual improvements, although I enjoyed the visuals of the original. The game felt like a deck builder because it looked like one. But I’ll reserve judgment until I can get my hands on it.

What We Know About The Story

The game’s Steam page tells us that the sequel is set 1,000 years after the original game.

The gameplay trailer also gives away some information:

We also know that Ironclad and Silent, who were the original two characters from the first game, will be returning for the second game. But they will have new cards and skills, as well as some new character-specific relics.

A third character, Necrobinder, has also been unleashed. Necrobinder seemingly applies Doom to their enemies and utilises souls. They also have an Addams Family Thing style familiar, called Osty, who will, as it were, lend a hand. Albeit a skeletal, bony hand.

And, in keeping with the first game, there will also be a fourth character. But, for now, details of the final character have not been released.

The Cultists are present in the trailer, as well as a host of new baddies that slayers will have to face.

And, developers have talked about card bundles – packs of three synergous cards that will work together and that can be selected before heading into combat. It’ll be interesting to see how that works out.

That’s pretty much all we know right now, except that Mega Crit has said they intend to make the game as mod-friendly as possible, thanks to “less spaghetti code”.
